History of the Spiders, more accurately, Opiliones (daddy-long-legs)
Inspiration? Don't ask.
Spider 1, 2009, built from Cedar with a wooden head and bolted three-ply joints. Lasted 2 years in Princeton then collapsed. Rebuilt with stronger joints, lasted 2 more years, then collapsed again. Cedar is too soft to carry the weight.
Spider 2, 2010, first try with Fiberglass - light and strong and weatherproof. Put together in Princeton for Jean and Randy in Racine, WI. Disassembled and driven out there, built permanently in their yard. Still going strong despite ferocious Wisconsin storms and winters.
Spider 3, 2012, repeat of the Fiberglass. Out to Cincinnati for Sonja. Big hit. 6 months later it collapsed. The legs were too thin/weak. Rebuilt, but collapsed again after another 6 months. Head still in Cincinnati waiting for a remake.
Spider 4, 2014, Fiberglass replacement for Spider 1 in Princeton. Just in time for the Wedding. Still going strong.
